Alec and Jo draw on a combined knowledge of nearly 50 years as bespoke framers.  They are recognized as long-standing and established experts and educators in the picture framing industry.  Which sits alongside their extensive industry-based voluntary work.  The result is that both are uniquely placed to bring all their experience and industry know-how to the picture framing training that they offer. Drawing students from across the country, they are the premier location for picture framing training in South West England. It is an unrivaled centre for industry focused expertise and knowledge. In recognition, the UK trade association the Fine Art Trade Guild has awarded them both Guild Certified Examiner and Guild Accredited Trainer status.

Qualification and Training Credentials

They both started their Guild framing education journey by passing the Guild Certified Framer qualification. In addition, they are one of a handful of framers worldwide to have achieved all three available advanced qualifications. Advanced: Conservation Framing, Advanced: Textile Framing and Advanced: Mount Design & Function. Expanding their knowledge from multiple sources including training in the USA and the UK as well as time served experience.  With the distinction that The Framing Lot was the first company worldwide to have two fully qualified working framers.

“I came away from the training with so many improvements to techniques and better materials to use that I feel much more positive about the work I am producing.” Zachary, South Coast

They have presented a great many industry relevant in-person and on-line seminars and workshops over the past 20 years. But they’ve also been active contributors to the technical support rota for members of the Guild for nearly a decade. They have written numerous articles for trade publications, including CPD education for Guild Certified Framers through the Guild.  Alec and Jo are not content with just teaching about framing standards.  As volunteers, they were part of the team that updated those standards over the past decade .

“The two days spent training ….. were fun, informative and inspiring … full of ideas, practical techniques and solutions for everyday framing projects in the workshop.” Amy, South EastAlec training on the underpinner

They are now able to offer full day training opportunities either at their workshop in Dawlish or by arrangement at the student’s own premises. Their courses primarily aim at those seeking to earn their living from picture framing. As well as those seeking to establish it alongside their other art based activities. From beginner to more knowledgeable – the courses provide a wide range of learning opportunities with modular days for specialized subjects, each tailored to the student’s own needs.

“It was one of the best training courses I’ve ever been on.  Packed with information and really intense – but in a good way!!”  Emma, Midlands

As Guild Examiners they provide exam preparation days for those seeking to take their Guild Certified Framer qualification or any of the Advanced qualifications. Achieved with their up to date and thorough knowledge of the examination process.  Alec and Jo assisted in updating and revising the Guild’s exams and qualifications.  Their role as Examiners uniquely allows them to provide a “mock exam” review to give confidence.  The Framing Lot is a recognized examination centre for all Fine Art Trade Guild framing qualifications.  As a result students can undertake a preparation day, followed by taking the exam in familiar surroundings.

“Alec and Jo put me totally at ease and helped me focus … my examination day would have been far more stressful without them being so calm.” Sarah, Midlands
